Merav Tal is a mother of two from Rishon LeZion. She runs a Women's clothing boutique named "The Gingiot (redheads, in Hebrew) in Bonka" in Gedera. Her daughter describes her as "a dominant mom, with a fiery personality”.
Merav spent the holiday eve with her partner Yair ‘Ya-Ya’ Yaakov in their kibbutz, Nir Oz. On Saturday October 7 the two were kidnapped from their home on the kibbutz. Yair's children, Yagil (13) and Or (16) were simultaneously kidnapped from their mother’s home by Hamas terrorists.
Yagil and Or Yaakov were freed on November 27th, after spending 52 days in Hamas captivity, following a temporary cease-fire agreement. Merav was freed the day after and reunited with her family.
On 15 February Kibbutz Nir Oz announced with a broken heart that Yair ‘Ya-Ya’ was murdered by Hamas terrorists and his body is still held captive in Gaza. Yair will be unimaginably missed.

Dear Merav,
I am writing to you with a heart full of sorrow and empathy for everything you have endured. The pain and trauma you have experienced are beyond words and I want to extend my deepest condolences for the loss of Yair. I cannot imagine the anguish you must feel, knowing that Yair was taken from you so brutally and that his body remains held captive. Please know that my thoughts are with you during this incredibly difficult time.
I also want to acknowledge the unimaginable strength you have shown throughout this ordeal. To have survived such a traumatic experience and then face the news of Yair’s death requires a resilience that few could muster. The fact that you were reunited with Yagil and Or, even in such tragic circumstances, is a small light in this darkness and I hope their presence brings you some comfort and solace.
The days ahead will undoubtedly be challenging, as you navigate the grief of losing Yair and the ongoing pain of not having him properly laid to rest. Please remember that you don’t have to carry this burden alone. There are people who care deeply about you and who want to support you in any way they can. Allow yourself to lean on them, to grieve and to take the time you need to heal.
It’s okay to feel overwhelmed, to feel lost, or even angry at the injustice of it all. What you have been through is beyond what anyone should ever have to endure. Be kind to yourself and know that your feelings are valid and understood. The path to healing will be long but you don’t have to walk it alone.
Yair’s memory will live on through you, Yagil, and Or. The love you shared and the life you built together are things that cannot be taken away, even by the horrors you have faced. In time, I hope you find peace in the memories you hold and in the knowledge that Yair’s spirit continues to live on in those who loved him.
Please, take care of yourself, Merav. Know that many people are thinking of you, wishing you strength and holding you in their hearts during this incredibly painful time.
With deepest sympathy and support.
Jack
