Ron Scherman

19

Sergeant Ron Scherman, 19, from Lehavim.

Ron Scherman was born to Dr. Maayan Scherman and Dr. Alex Scherman, both esteemed veterinarians, and grew up alongside his siblings, Eden and Dan, in a nurturing environment that fostered his aspirations and talents. Ron, a citizen of both Israel and Argentina, was characterized by his remarkable self-assurance, intelligence, and the innate ability to navigate life's challenges with ease. He was a figure of admiration among his peers, cherished for his warmth and the genuine connections he formed with those around him. Ambitious and forward-looking, Ron harbored aspirations of carving out a professional path for himself either in law or engineering.
Ron's personal charm was equally matched by his physical appearance; an impressive, strong young man who captured attention with his captivating smile and the whimsical, yet graceful look in his eyes, traits that made him all the more memorable.
In his military career, Ron dedicated himself to serving in the IDF's Combat Support Unit for Coordination and Liaison at the Ministry of Defence. His role was pivotal, bridging Israeli authorities with the commercial sectors in Gaza, a responsibility that saw him facilitate the smooth transit of goods between Gazan businesses and Israel. Ron found fulfillment in his work, having acclimated well to the demands of his position over ten months of diligent service.
The morning of Saturday October 7th unfolded as a day of unforeseen tragedy for Ron and his family. Dressed casually in a shirt and shorts at his military base near the Gaza border, Ron's day took a harrowing turn. A phone call to his parents at 06:30 revealed a palpable sense of fear in Ron's voice as he reported hearing Arabic voices and the imminent threat of terrorist presence at the base. His final, heart-wrenching words to his mother, "Bye mom. I love you. That’s it. They’re here, it's over," marked the last communication Ron would have with his family.
The subsequent hours brought the family face-to-face with the grim reality of Ron's situation through a video posted by Hamas terrorists, showing the attack and the abduction of Ron alongside Nik Beizer and Tamir Nimrodi. A photograph later emerged, showing Ron seated in the terrorists' car with his hands tied, evoking a mix of hope and agony from his family, especially his younger sister Eden, who saw in him the strength to endure.
In their quest for Ron's safe return, the Scherman family engaged with figures of influence, including Argentina's President Alberto Ángel Fernández and the renowned singer León Gieco, Ron's uncle, who both pledged their support.
The devastating news of Ron's demise was delivered to the Scherman family by the IDF, after retrieving the bodies of Ron Scherman and Nik Beizer, who were abducted and held together, and Eliya Toledano, who was kidnapped from the Nova music festival near Re'im. Ron, Nik and Eliya had been kidnapped alive, their lives tragically cut short by the events following their abduction.
Ron was laid to rest in Lehavim on Friday December 15th, in a ceremony attended by hundreds who came to pay their respects and bid farewell. The ambiguity surrounding the cause of Ron's death was later resolved, attributing the tragic loss to the inhalation of toxic gases from collateral damage during IDF operations.
At his funeral, Ron's family shared heartfelt tributes, reflecting on his radiant presence and the profound impact he had on their lives. His father, Alex, lamented the dreams left unfulfilled due to Ron's untimely death, while his siblings, Dan and Eden, spoke of the loss of innocence, and in Eden’s words: “You were an angelic child who became an angel in heaven." Maayan, Ron's mother, said with pain: "Ron, The child who always had luck on his side, found that on the very Saturday when he needed his luck the most, it failed to be with him.” She later expressed her deep sorrow over the cruel fate that befell her son, underscoring the negligence that led to his sacrifice.
In memory of Sergeant Ron Scherman, his tombstone bears a testament to his life and the circumstances surrounding his death: "Sergeant Ron Scherman: Kidnapped, abandoned, and sacrificed in Gaza by the failed government in the disaster of October 7th, 2023. Loving and missing you".
The tombstone became a point of bitter dispute between the Scherman family and the Ministry of Defense. The stone was removed from its place. In its stead, Maayan placed a stone with the epitaph:
"I miss you terribly. I apologize for the neglect, your brutal kidnapping, the fact that you were sacrificed for political gain following the greatest disaster in the history of Israel, a country you loved so much. Sadly, the Ministry of Defense stole the original sign. Love you, Mom."

Honor the memory of Ron
Ron was kidnapped by Hamas, and later his family was informed that he was killed.
