Alex Lobanov

32

Alex, an Israeli-Russian citizen, made Aliya and arrived in Ashkelon at the age of eight. He quickly grew to love the city and its coastal lifestyle, embracing surfing and the outdoors. An active member of Israel’s jeep community, he frequently leads explorations across the country’s diverse terrain and is committed to volunteer work with a roadside assistance NGO.
Alex enjoys Israeli music, particularly the classics, attending concerts, and embracing life. Alex is a family man, always the first to offer assistance and prioritizes his wife Michal and his two-year-old son Tom. Their second son was born while Alex is still in captivity.
The trio of Alex, Zohar, and Dima, inseparable since a pivotal trip to Thailand, faced their first birthday apart following Alex's abduction at the Nova music festival, where he was in charge of the bar. "It feels like I'm missing something in my body," Dima shared.
Known as the dynamic force within his circle, Alex's absence leaves a tangible void, underscored by his efforts to rescue others on that harrowing Saturday in October. Even under threat, his instinct was to aid and protect, a testament to his character.
Zohar recounts the events of October 7th: Alex described being under a heavy missile attack, seeking shelter. Communication with his family lasted until 9:00AM, during which he indicated he was escaping. He assured his wife, Michal, that he was safe in the woods, but soon after, all contact ceased. It was later learned that Alex had helped save other attendees, escaping with a group through Be’eri forest. While the others were found, Alex's whereabouts remained unknown. It wasn't until 18 days had passed, initially marked as missing, that he was officially recognized as kidnapped, leaving his family without an explanation for the sudden change.
Alex and Michal have been together since they were 15. In late February 2024, as Alex is still held hostage in Gaza, Michal gave birth to their healthy baby boy. Alex's friends have stepped in to fill his shoes partially, supporting Michal through the challenging and complex journey she's faced since her husband’s abduction. "We do everything to ensure she's supported and at ease - whatever she needs, we respond and show up. She's so strong, so extraordinary, every time I speak with her, I'm in awe," Dima concludes.
Their collective hope remains for Alex's safe return home, a sentiment echoed across their close-knit circle of family and friends.
