Hisham Shaaban Al-Sayed
Hisham Shaaban Al-Sayed
35
Hisham Shaaban Al-Sayed, a Bedouin Arab Israeli civilian, has been held by Hamas in Gaza since 2015. Contrary to Hamas's claims, he is not an Israeli soldier but a civilian with mental health issues, therefore exempted from military service.
Hisham, who also suffers from hearing loss, tinnitus and vertigo, was discharged from a brief military volunteering in 2008 due to incompatibility. He has a history of wandering into the West Bank, following auditory hallucinations.
In June 2022, Hamas released a video of a visibly unwell al-Sayed, confused but aware of his surroundings. The video drew Israeli an international condemnation.
His family and the Bedouin community anxiously await Hisham’s safe return home.
