Naama Levy is a 19-year-old peace activist and a
great-granddaughter of Holocaust survivors from Poland.
Naama is the second of four siblings. At first glance, she appears delicate and quiet, but with a bit of patience, one can discover her light, joy of life, strength, and determination. Like any girl her age, she loves spending time with friends, laughing and goofing around. Yet, she also possesses a strong will; an athlete turned determined triathlete, Naama is known to make bold choices.
After completing a high school diplomacy program, she joined the "Hands of Peace" delegation designed to connect Palestinian, American, and Israeli youth and encourage them to make a change. She also managed to volunteer for a year in Be’er Ora in a kindergarten with refugee children. Recently, she shared with friends her desire to do something meaningful in life.
Tragically, Naama became one of the many hostages taken by Hamas terrorists on October 7. Newly assigned to Nahal Oz after completing her observer course, Naama's kidnapping is a bitter irony, given her dedicated efforts to promote understanding between Israelis and Palestinians.
The harrowing footage of Naama being dragged by her hair into a jeep in Gaza - with her hands tied behind her back and her tracksuit stained with blood, amidst Gazan onlookers celebrating - is perhaps the most iconic image of an Israeli girl being manhandled by terrorists.
Ayelet Levy Shachar, Naama's mother, shared her anguish. She keeps replaying the footage of her daughter's abduction, desperately worrying about Naama's wellbeing, her basic needs and overall safety.
The irony of Naama's situation is not lost on her family and friends; many of those kidnapped by Hamas were actively engaged in peace activities. They are individuals who believed in building bridges for peace, tragically targeted in an act of unimaginable violence.
As relatives attend rallies calling for the hostages'
release, Ayelet's plea is heartbreakingly simple: to have Naama back home, safe and sound, ending this painful chapter marked by uncertainty and fear.
Naama’s family, her supporters from near and far and the entire nation are eagerly anticipating her return; waiting for her to continue realizing her dreams.
